The archive image taken in Southern England (March 1944)features Winston Churchill firing a Thompson Sub Machine Gun (aka Tommy Gun) alongside Supreme Allied Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force, General Dwight D. Eisenhower as American soldiers look on. The British military were the first to utilise the Tommy Gun in combat during WWII. Weighing in at just under 11lbs, 20lbs with a full 100 round drum machine, the sheer weight of the gun was enough to task the infantrymen responsible for carrying the load. Made famous by depression era gangsters such as John Dillinger, Al Capone, Bugs Moran and Machinegun Kelly, the Tommy Gun is also know as The Chicago Piano, The Chopper and The Trench Broom.
