The image shows Winston Churchill on the Mulberry Harbour at Arromanches. These Mulberry Harbours were referred to by Churchill as being a 'principal part of the great plan'. Mulberry Harbours were temporary and portable harbours developed by Britain to facilitate rapid offloading of cargo during the Allied invasion of Normandy. Mulberry 'B' was the harbour assembled on Gold Beach at Arromanches. The harbour was decommissioned six months after D-Day. Remnants of the Harbour still remain to this day. The Harbour at Arromanches became known affectionately as 'Port Winston' after the great man himself.
