The Airspeed Oxford or 'Ox-Box' as it became affectionately known was a twin engine monoplane that played a key role in WWII. Legendary photographer Cecil Beaton captured this image by framing this shot with planes own circular engine cowling. It's a brilliant photograph expertly transposed into graphic print form for this cool Retro Realm & empire T-shirt - 'Airspeed Oxford' Mens T-shirt by Realm & Empire.

The Airspeed Oxford was primarily used to train complete aircrews for RAF's Bomber Command. It could simultaneously train pilots, navigators, bomb aimers, gunners, or radio operators on the same flight. Celebrated author Neville Shute (on the Beach, A Town Like Alice) was one of the aeronautical engineers who helped design the original 1931 model. In fact it was his and designer Hessel Tiltman's company Airspeed Ltd that both developed and produced the aircraft.

Cecil Beaton was something of a multi talented artist. Famous for photography particularly in the fields of fashion, portrait and war, Beaton also won Academy Awards for stage and costume design. Posted to the Ministry of Information during WWII, Beaton captured many images from the Home Front. He is perhaps best known for recording the damage caused by the German Blitz.
