The 'Bellam' is the Arabic name for a long, narrow canoe shaped boat , the gondola of Basra and the Tigris. Self-professed 'Chronicler of Travels', Donald Maxwell* was one of the artists entrusted to produce specific works for propaganda or to record events on the battlefield during WWI. Maxwell was commissioned as an official War artist and this stunning illustration features a Bellam being skillfully manoeuvred over a narrow creek at Basra. Most of Donald Maxwell's illustrated books stemmed from his experiences travelling abroad. His experiences from his time in Basra and along the River Tigris were the foundation of many of his works during WWI. He also illustrated books for many authors, one of whom was Rudyard Kipling.
