The Pretty Things named themselves after the Bo Diddley song 'Pretty Thing'. The name was also intended as a sideswipe at those who derided their long haired appearence.
1965 saw the Pretty Things release two albums. The first - self titled 'The Pretty Things' in March 1965 was released just a month after the performance at the King Mojo Club on 21st February 1965. The second 'Get the Picture' followed later that year in December.
'The Pretty Things' as legend would have it was recorded in just two days and perfectly captured the raw intensity of their live performances. The early days saw the Pretty Things combine both R&B staples with self penned anthems and it is these early R&B inspired classics that delighted Sheffield's mod King Mojo Crowd in '65.
The Pretty Things always held a close affinity to the mod way of life and their song 'Midnight to Six Man' was an accurate, inspiring and articulate attempt at defining the mod lifestyle - A lifestyle that was reality for the Mojo crowd from 1964-1967.
Just two months after the King Mojo gig in Sheffield, The Pretty Things made their first trip to Holland- A riotous show in Blokker shown live on Dutch TV. The broadcast was terminated halfway through the bands third song as outraged viewers called the TV station to complain. Phil May's suggestive performance coupled with an exciteable crowd was obviously too much for some to take - Afterall it was only 1965.
One thing is for sure - The pretty Things Sheffield King Mojo Club expereince in the sixties certainly would have been a legendary night to remember.
