Traditionally, the loafer is a leather slip on shoe with moccasin construction and broad flat heels and earned it's name from shoes that dairy farmers would wear in the cattle loafing area. Thanks to an Esquire magazine article in the thirties, these dairy farmers shoes were mimicked and updated for the fashion loving highstreet shoppers.
For mod's in the sixties the loafer/quad's intricate design features made them an ideal shoe to finish off dapper clothing and add a touch of class to an outfit. Black punched leather loafer, quad shoes with tassles. Moccasin front styling (typical of traditional loafers). Tan leather outsole with contrast black rim and heel. Tassles attached to cross bar apron (where traditionally a penny or dime would be placed in order for a phone call to be made in case of an emergency- hence the name penny loafer).
