The Desert Rats were formed in Egypt in 1938 and carried out many important duties and missions. They took part Battle of El Alamein, which was considered one of the decisive victories of the Second World War, leading to the retreat of the Afrika Korps and the German surrender in North Africa in May 1943. Referring to 'El Alamein' after the war, Sir Winston Churchill wrote:
'Before Alamein we never had a victory. After Alamein, we never had a defeat..
The Desert Rats are one of the most well known and indeed iconic divisions of the British Army. Having seen distinguished action throughout the duration of WWII, the Desert Rats name and motto became a symbol of determination and courage in the face of adversity.
In his address to the 7th army division in Berlin, 1945, Sir Winston Churchill said:
'Dear Desert Rats!
It is not without emotion that I can express what I feel about the Desert Rats. May our glory ever shine! May your laurels never fade! May the memory of this glorious pilgrimage of war which you have made from Alamein, via the Baltic to Berlin, never die!...'
