The dog and gramophone design is inspired by a true story of a stray dog found in 1884. Nipper who was found in Bristol before finding his home in Liverpool with Francis Barraud was originally painted in 1895. Barraud had often found the dog staring quizzically at the gramophone , puzzled as to where the noise was coming from. The original painting was called ‘Dog looking at and listening to a phonograph' and was copywrited by Francis Barraud in 1899. In the original version the horn was black.
