Realm & Empire 'General Monty' Men's Retro photo print T-shirt. The subject of this fab Retro Tee is one of Britain's most successful military commanders, Bernard Law Montgomery or 'Monty' as he affectionately became known. In 1940 he commanded an infantry division during the evacuation of Dunkirk and in 1942 he led the Eighth Army to victory at the Second Battle of Alamein. It was victory in this battle which changed the fortunes of the allied forces in the North African campaign, truly a major turning point in the Western Desert war. Field Marshal Montgomery was also in command of all Allied ground forces during Operation Overlord from the initial landings until after the Battle of Normandy. Monty also named his pet spaniel after his German arch rival, Rommel (who was nicknamed the Desert Fox for his exploits in the Western Desert war). A candid photograph still exists of Monty and Churchill sitting together with the latter stroking Rommel, the dog that is!
