Amongst his animals were a docile lion named Nero and the first lion to be bred in captivity in Britain, William. Wombwell's lion taming achievements became legendary, even mentioned in Arthur Conan Doyle's short story, Sherlock Holmes The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger.
