HISTORY OF VIYELLA

Viyella is a clothing brand steeped with heritage values. Viyella fabric (after which the company is named) was created in 1893 and was the first branded fabric in the world.  By 1907 the company started making the fabric into clothing. The original wool/cotton blend is no longer available but Viyella still create high quality clothing and furnishings from a variety of fabrics.

In 1942 Viyella started to manufacture durable and hard wearing clothing with a special 'Dayella' fabric for the war effort. The range was cited by the President of the Board of Trade as "the best utility cloth in its class and an outstanding example of all a cloth should be". These characteristics of their clothing are still valued to this day.

In the 1960s Viyella grew into one of the biggest textile businesses in the UK, owning 40 factories across the country. Viyella gained a high profile in London and Paris and attracted interest from designers such as Yves Saint Laurent and Nina Ricci. Throughout the 60s they created classic styles, that are popular to this day. The 1960s is also when their classic button down shirts became popular within the Mod culture.

To this day Viyella is thriving, combining sophisticated features and retro styling. Fantastic clothing with a Mod and vintage-style twist!
