This cool 'Venice of the East' Realm & Empire Retro T-shirt incorporates a graphic print of a scene depicted by celebrated travel writer and illustrator Donald Maxwell. He recorded his experiences via detailed ink drawings whilst sailing along the River Tigris. He was commissioned by the Imperial War Museum (IWM). This illustration shows Basra, enchantingly nicknamed 'The Venice of The East'.

Most of Donald Maxwell's illustrated books stemmed from his experiences travelling abroad. He also illustrated books for many authors, one of whom was Rudyard Kipling.
Of Basra's semblance to Venice, Maxwell romanticized, ‘Basra can boast no architecture, but nature, coming to her assistance, can produce vistas of orange-laden trees, overtopped with palms and all reflected in the still canal.’
