At its peak, around 75% of production was bound for overseas markets.

A particularly charming piece of history surfaced in 2012 when the modern Pantherella team uncovered photos of a letter addressed to Pablo Picasso accompanied by a pair of Pantherella socks stitched with two tiny embroidered P’s, believed to be a customised pair for the artist himself. It was a small but delightful confirmation of the brand’s mid-century influence.

2024 Update: A New Chapter in Italy
In May 2024, after more than 85 years of manufacturing in Leicester, Pantherella announced that production would shift to Italy. The decision marked a significant moment in the company’s story, but rather than signalling an end to tradition, it represents an evolution—one shaped by the demands of an increasingly global customer base.
Pantherella emphasised that this was a strategic step designed to support growth while maintaining the exceptional standards customers expect. Italy’s long-respected textile craftsmanship, modern manufacturing infrastructure, and proximity to the premium Italian yarns Pantherella has long used make it a natural fit. As the company noted, the move ensures that the luxurious fibres central to its identity now travel only a short distance from source to finished product.
While there is natural nostalgia for the decades of British production on Hallaton Street, the transition can be seen as a continuation of the brand’s founding ethos: combining heritage with innovation, tradition with progress.
