Pantherella: The Finest English Socks
We’ve always had a soft spot for brands with real heritage, and few names carry the same quiet authority and enduring craftsmanship as Pantherella. Founded in 1937 as Midland Hosiery Mills before adopting the now-iconic Pantherella name in 1945, the company quickly built a reputation for pioneering techniques that would change how men think about socks forever. Its promise was bold—The Finest English Socks—and, remarkably, it lived up to it.
The brand’s visionary force was Louis Goldschmidt, a man with an eye for innovation and a frustration with the thick, scratchy socks of the era. Working in Leicester, then a thriving hub of textile production, Goldschmidt believed that fine-gauge socks—lighter, sleeker, more refined—were the future. To realise the idea, he persuaded local machine makers P.A. Bentley to develop a specialist knitting machine capable of producing feather-light socks with seamless toes and precise, elegant finishes.
The experiment worked. By the early 1940s, Pantherella had moved into its long-standing factory on Hallaton Street, later expanding to a larger premises just across the road. With this growth came international recognition. Goldschmidt’s shrewd network of contacts allowed Pantherella to export throughout Europe and, by the late 1940s, into North America and Australia. At its peak, around 75% of production was bound for overseas markets.

The socks gained admirers from all walks of life—celebrities, aristocrats and even artists. A particularly charming piece of history surfaced in 2012 when the modern Pantherella team uncovered photos of a letter addressed to Pablo Picasso accompanied by a pair of Pantherella socks stitched with two tiny embroidered P’s, believed to be a customised pair for the artist himself. It was a small but delightful confirmation of the brand’s mid-century influence.
Craftsmanship That Endures
Pantherella built its reputation not simply on style, but on method. The brand became renowned for its seamless toes—a small detail with huge comfort benefits—and for its use of exceptional yarns. From luxurious Sea Island Cotton to soft, temperature-regulating merino wool, Pantherella consistently selected materials that elevated everyday wear into something quietly luxurious.
Even as modern machinery entered the production process, traditional hand-finishing remained a hallmark. Every pair passes through skilled hands for final quality checks, ensuring the standards set in the 1930s still shape the product today. As Managing Director Justin Hall once put it, "We are not a brand that just looks to the past – we are constantly innovating, following trends and employing modern machinery to make sure we continue to be the best sock makers in the world"; innovation and fashion consciousness are as essential as heritage.
Why the Name “Pantherella”?
The origins of the name, curiously, are lost to time. Goldschmidt selected it in 1937 when the company rebranded, and while no definitive explanation survives, the choice was savvy. In a region boasting more than 200 hosiery companies at mid-century, a memorable and distinctive name was essential—and Pantherella fitted the bill perfectly.
2024 Update: A New Chapter in Italy
In May 2024, after more than 85 years of manufacturing in Leicester, Pantherella announced that production would shift to Italy. The decision marked a significant moment in the company’s story, but rather than signalling an end to tradition, it represents an evolution—one shaped by the demands of an increasingly global customer base.
Pantherella emphasised that this was a strategic step designed to support growth while maintaining the exceptional standards customers expect. Italy’s long-respected textile craftsmanship, modern manufacturing infrastructure, and proximity to the premium Italian yarns Pantherella has long used make it a natural fit. As the company noted, the move ensures that the luxurious fibres central to its identity now travel only a short distance from source to finished product.
While there is natural nostalgia for the decades of British production on Hallaton Street, the transition can be seen as a continuation of the brand’s founding ethos: combining heritage with innovation, tradition with progress. What matters most remains intact—quality, refinement and a product designed to last.
