Used to secure the cuffs of dress shirts, cufflinks are a stylish accessory and interestingly they have also been worn as a way of covert communication, and we aren't even talking James Bond style transmitter cufflinks. During World War II, for instance, French Resistance members could recognize each other by the Cross of Lorraine cufflinks they wore.
Cufflinks as gifts for the groomsman at weddings is a traditional custom that still exists today. It was in the 17th century that early forms of the cufflinks we know today emerged. Indeed, King Charles II (1630-1685) popularised cufflinks by regularly wearing them in public, although it wasn't until much later in 1876, when George Krementz revolutionised the manufacturing process, so that cufflinks could be mass produced. Krementz was actually inspired by the manufacturing process used for making bullets. In 1884 Krementz introduced the one-piece collar button machine, an invention that further revolutionised the cufflinks manufacturing process.
