The History of Ben Sherman Clothing
Few names are as iconic in Mod fashion as Ben Sherman. Born Arthur Benjamin Sugarman in Brighton in 1925, he learned the clothing trade in the USA before returning to the UK in the early 1960s. In 1963, he launched the very first Ben Sherman button-down shirt, setting in motion a style revolution.
At the time, London’s modern jazz fans and early 60s Mods were craving sharp American Oxford shirts from Brooks Brothers and Arrow. Spotting the demand, Sherman created his own, using superior fabrics and stitching. The result was an instant hit with the Mods, who embraced his shirts as the ultimate symbol of sharp dressing.
By the mid-60s, Ben Sherman had a presence on Carnaby Street, the heart of Mod London, and soon after, their first standalone shop in Brighton. Through the late 60s and 70s, Ben Sherman shirts became a wardrobe essential for Mods, Skinheads, and later Punk subcultures. Owning a Ben Sherman wasn’t just about fashion — it was about identity.
Today, Ben Sherman remains synonymous with retro menswear and continues to reissue its most iconic styles. From gingham shirts and house check classics to archive floral, paisley and stripe prints, the collection blends timeless 60s style with a modern edge. At Atom Retro, you’ll find both the latest men’s shirts and new season polos, knitwear, jackets, and more, proving why the Ben Sherman Mod shirt is still the shirt to be seen in.
