What Is A Harrington Jacket?

The Harrington started life as a workwear jacket - a practical jacket which would protect from rain and wind while also enabling the wearer to move and work unencumbered. In 1937 brothers Isaac and John Miller designed a short blouson jacket with ribbed trims, flap pockets, tartan lining and distinctive collar, for thier rainwear label, Baracuta. The Baracuta G9 Harrington as the jacket became known, incorporated rain resistant fabrics and practical trims to trap warmth without restricting movement. Much copied, but never bettered, the Harrington jacket was born. 

A timeless aesthetic and unrivalled casual style seal the Harrington Jacket’s status as an essential outerwear garment. Men’s Harrington’s have seamlessly crossed over from their workwear roots into mainstream fashion via the Americana Ivy League look of the 1950s. Perhaps most notably the Harrington was adopted by the Mod subculture in the 1960s and then again during the Mod Revival era of the late 1970s and early 1980s. The 1990’s Indie Britpop era saw the Harrington find a whole new audience and indeed the jacket has been a mainstay of the gentlemen’s wardrobe ever since.

Worn by a host of stars past and present the Harrington Jacket boasts Elvis Presley, James Dean, Frank Sinatra and the King of Cool, Steve McQueen as its most notable admirers. When Daniel Craig donned a version of the original Baracuta G4 Harrington in the James Bond epic, ‘Quantum of Solace’, the Harrington Jacket trend exploded.
