2026 marks the 90th anniversary of the iconic G.H. Bass Weejuns loafer. First introduced in 1936, Bass Weejuns have spent nine decades at the heart of classic American Ivy League style, before becoming an essential part of British Mod fashion in the 1960s.
Famous for their penny loafers and tassel loafers, G.H. Bass took inspiration from traditional Norwegian slip-on shoes when creating the original Weejun in 1936. The name itself was derived from "Norwegian", and the new style would go on to become the world's first penny loafer.
By the 1950s, Bass Weejuns loafers had become synonymous with the American Ivy League look. Their smart yet relaxed style was worn by everyone from university students to cultural icons including John F. Kennedy and James Dean. When British Mods began looking across the Atlantic for inspiration in the early 1960s, the clean-cut Weejun was a natural fit. Paired with sharp tailoring, button-down shirts and other Ivy League staples, Bass Weejuns became an enduring Mod footwear classic.

90 Years of G.H. Bass Weejuns
The story of G.H. Bass began in Maine, USA, where George Henry Bass founded his footwear company in 1876. Bass produced everything from moccasins and boat shoes to chukka boots, but it was the arrival of the Weejuns loafer in 1936 that would create one of the company's most enduring designs.
Inspired by Norwegian slip-on footwear, the original Weejun transformed a practical shoe into an American style icon. Traditionally bench-crafted with hand-stitched detailing, its distinctive construction helped create the timeless heritage look that still defines G.H. Bass loafers today.
From 1950s Ivy League campuses to the British Mod scene and beyond, Bass Weejuns have crossed generations and subcultures without losing their identity. Ninety years after their introduction in 1936, the Bass Weejuns penny loafer remains one of the most recognisable loafer styles in the world.
