Umbro

Umbro Since 1924. Celebrating it's centenary year in 2024, Umbro Clothing is back with a homage to styles from the 1990s Britpop era including classic Retro Drill Tops and Track Jackets. The iconic Umbro Double Diamond is recognised the world over and Umbro founder, Harold Humphrey's believed that style was a performance advantage, proclaiming 'If you look smart, you play smart'.

Who Founded Umbro?

Umbro was founded by brothers, Harold and Wallace Humphreys in Wimslow, 1924.

From working out of the back room of their parents pub to working out of stock rooms. It was in 1930 that Umbro opened their first factory to meet with customer demand.

Where does the Umbro name come from?

Umbro is a portmanteau (blended word) that derives from the 'Um' in Humphrey's, the founders surname, and 'Bro' from Brothers (the relationship bewteen the two founders Harold and Wallace).

In 1935 Umbro released their first brochure. It was called the Umbrochure, which might well be the best name ever conceived for a brochure!

Who wears Umbro?

In 1954, Roger Bannister smashed the four minute mile wearing Umbro.

In 1958, Brazil won their first World Cup wearing an Umbro kit.

In 1966, England win the World Cup wearing Umbro. In fact 15 out of 16 teams in the '66 World Cup are kitted out by Umbro!

At the height of Britpop in 1996, Liam Gallagher wore a version of Umbro's iconic Drill Smocks during an Oasis gig at Maine road in Manchester.
