Hats
Immortalised by John Lennon in The Beatles classic film A Hard Days Night, the newsboy cap, or as we call it the Beatle hat or Lennon cap is one of our all time best sellers. Madcap England's corduroy Beatle hats come in an array of fab colours. Instantly recognisable with it's button strap detail, flat crown and classic peak, the Beatle hat looks great dressed up or down. A vintage aesthetic that never fails to look cool.
Similar styles to the Newsboy cap are Failsworth's Spitfire and Bakerboy hats, crafted from stylish panels and often in premium fabrics such as Harris Tweed. The Gatsby Cap (named after Jay gatsby, the main protagonist in F. Scott Fitzgerald's, The Great Gatsby fgrom 1925) is another iconic hat silhouette. Robert Redford's portrayal of Jay Gatsby in 1974's film interpretation of the book bought the classic panelled hat with front peak and button crown to a whole new audience. The name Gatsby Cap was popularised and coined because of the film.
More hats that look great worn with smart suits and blazers are styles such as the Trilby Hat and Fedora Hat. These styles evoke images of 1950s Americana, The Rat Pack's Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin suited and booted and the classic vintage Gangster aesthetic with pin stripe suits, big collars and Trilby hats with grossgrain bands.
Fans of Ska, 2-Tone and the Mod Revival era will recognise the Porkpie Hat as the headwear of choice. The Porkpie Hat features a flat telescopic crown with upturned brim all the way round (or occasionally up at the back and down at the front).
On a more casual look, the iconic Bucket Hat conjures up images of 1980s Rave culture, The Stone Roses and not long after the 1990s Indie Britpop era. A style typified by a soft fabric crown with flat top and deconstructed brim punctuated by rows of stitching. The Bucket Hat can come in a stunning array of patterns and colours. Pretty Green are proponents of the classic indie Bucket Hat often using the style with their seasonal signature paisley prints. On a more Casuals slant, Fila Vintage, Sergio Tacchini and Ellesse add a more sporty tennis twist to their bucket hats with colour blocking and retro stripes.
Let's finish with a quote from Frank SInatra - 'Cock your hat, angles are attitudes'...
