Originating in 1963, Ben Sherman became the go-to brand for the iconic Mod subculture in Britain. The Mods, with their sharply tailored suits and love of American jazz, needed a new kind of shirt; one that was stylish, quality-made, and unique. Founder Arthur Benjamin Sugarman, aka Ben Sherman, answered that call.
The brand’s signature button-down shirt was influenced by American Ivy League style, but Sherman added his own flair with vibrant patterns like gingham, colorful oxford fabrics, a loop on the back of the collar, and a box pleat. This focus on high-quality fabrics, distinctive designs, and a slim, stylish fit made it the quintessential Mod essential. From its Carnaby Street showroom, Ben Sherman's shirts became synonymous with the swinging sixties and its celebration of sharp, individualistic style.
