Inspired by the late-60s Space Race, the Telstar is a retro rocket-shaped lava lamp crafted by British makers at Mathmos in Poole, Dorset; the original home of the company founded in 1963. Its iconic form sits on precision-cast, chromed zinc legs and features a premium Yorkshire-made glass bottle filled with Mathmos’ unique, richly coloured lava formula in blue and green.
The first lava lamp was created in 1963 by inventor Edward Craven Walker, who developed the pioneering Astro design after spotting a two-liquid egg timer in a Dorset pub. Using cocktail and orange squash bottles in the early prototypes, he went on to establish the Mathmos brand, named after the bubbling liquid force beneath the city in the 1960s sci-fi comic strip Barbarella. By the late 60s and 70s, the lava lamp had become a symbol of the era’s playful futurism, a true cultural icon found in homes around the world.
