Often refered to as leather shank buttons, "football" buttons ifeature a unique surface design, which often features a woven or crisscross pattern that evokes the laces of a football, hence the nickname. They have a raised loop on the back (a shank) for attaching to the fabric, rather than holes on the face of the button.

The precise origin of the design is difficult to pinpoint, but its popularity and association with military uniforms suggest a British origin during the early 20th century, during and after the First World War. Officers sometimes replaced standard brass or gilt buttons with more practical leather ones for use in the field. This was especially common in regiments with less rigid regulations.

The "football" buttons eventually became a common feature on men's and women's coats, jackets, and knitwear. The design is a practical and rugged alternative to more delicate buttons, and a retro design classic.
