*Cecil Beaton was something of a multi talented artist. Famous for photography particularly in the fields of fashion, portrait and war, Beaton also won Academy Awards for stage and costume design. Posted to the Ministry of Information during WWII, Beaton captured many images from the Home Front. He is perhaps best known for recording the damage caused by the German Blitz.

There were two battles that took place at El Alamein during 1942. The first would stall the Axis forces and the second would end the Axis threat to Egypt, the Suez Canal and of gaining access to the Persian oil fields. The victory was a morale booting victory for the Allies. Sir Winston Churchill famously said of the battle:
'Before Alamein we never had a victory. After Alamein we never had a defeat.'
