Photographer and adventurer Frank Hurley captured this iconic ice mask image of explorer and geologist C.T. Madigan during an Antarctic Expedition (1911-1914). He was also amongst the party of explorers on Ernest Shackleton's ill fated Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition between 1914-1916, capturing images and documentary evidence that would be later be used in the docu-film South (1919). Hurley would later go on to record many images of war (both WWI and WWII) taking considerable risks to photograph subjects. He discussed in his diary (1917-1918) the philosophy and commitment to capturing images as - 'to illustrate to the public the things our fellows do and how war is conducted'.
