The harsh Antarctic landscape is where photographer, Frank Hurley captured this shot of explorer CT Madigan. The famous Snow Face imagery encapsulates the severity of the conditions. Hurley would later go on to photograph many subjects during WWI and WWII, never shying away from risks to capture the true imagery of war. Photographer and adventurer Frank Hurley captured this iconic ice mask image of explorer and geologist C.T. Madigan during an Antarctic Expedition (1911-1914). He was also amongst the party of explorers on Ernest Shackleton's ill fated Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition between 1914-1916, capturing images and documentary evidence that would be later be used in the docu-film South (1919). Hurley would later go on to record many images of war (both WWI and WWII) taking considerable risks to photograph subjects. He discussed in his diary (1917-1918) the philosophy and commitment to capturing images as - 'to illustrate to the public the things our fellows do and how war is conducted'.
