Turtleneck and Roll Neck Sweaters
A turtleneck, polo neck or roll neck is at its simplist a sweater or jumper with a close-fitting collar that folds over and covers the neck. A popular and comfortable style, with a long history, that has been adopted and adapted by generation after generation. Turtlenecks date back to at least the 15th century in Europe when they were worn by knights as protection under heavy chain mail.
By the late 1800s the look had become synomous with fishermen and labourers before being adopted by left wing academics and beatniks in the middle of the twentieth century. The syle was partially popularised Stateside in the 1920s by Noel Coward, with the high neck line seen as a great alternative to a shirt and tie. This more formal incarnation of the Turtleneck would later be adopted by students as a 50s preppy style which emphasised neatness, tidiness and grooming.
That smart Varsity style and beatnik subcultural vibe would be embraced by subsequent generations including the Mods in the 60s. The look has remained popular as a form smart-dress for those who are looking to avoid the traditional formal wear of shirt and tie. The high neck line also naturally makes the turtleneck an ideal sweater for the cooler months. A perfect layering item it combines well with a blazer, cardigan or overshirt.
